The Primary Industries Ministry is planning to plant 100,000 TEJC mango plants island wide at the auspicious time when the Sinhala and Tamil New Year dawns.
Titled ‘Nekathata Pelayak’, this will be part of a project to plant 100 million export crop plants this year.
The distribution of the mango plants took place under the auspices of minister Daya Gamage at Suhurupaya in Battaramulla today.
Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara and deputy minister Muttu Sivalingam too, participated.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Gamage said his ministry was able to raise spice production by 39 per cent despite the adverse effect on agriculture from the bad weather.
He said the planting project would especially help Samurdhi recipients to end their dependence on the Samurdhi subsistence.
The minister went onto say the present government took over a garbage problem and a debt problem from the Rajapaksas, and has been able to resolve the garbage matter, and is now resolving the debt problem.
He stressed the importance of increasing export revenue in order to pay back the debt without passing it onto the future generations.
